Medical Definition of (applied) kinesiology noun – a diagnostic system that uses manual testing of the functional integrity of muscles to identify illness in other parts of the body (Merriam-Webster)
What is Kinesiology?
Kinesiology is a holistic approach to achieving optimum health and wellness. A Kinesiologist utilises the practice of muscle monitoring to identify and access information relevant to our client’s wellness goals from the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of their life experiences.
While muscle monitoring is used by many health professionals, in a kinesiology session, muscle monitoring is used to access neural control and thought processes in addition to information from the muscular-skeletal system. This results in the ability to identify stressors and limiting thought patterns specific to each client. These are then transformed through the use of specialised tools from Eastern and Western Medicines, helping return the body, mind and spirit to a state of healthy balance and enable access to the unexpressed potential that we each hold.
There are many different types of Kinesiology available these days. I have chosen to specialise in Brain Gym®, Educational and Transformational Kinesiology and have recently added work by Damian Brown in the area of the metabolism and immune suppression. As each of these are educative processes, my clients take away much more than just the fundamental change a kinesiology session will bring. They also take away a greater understanding of themselves and their own unique process, continuing to grow long after our sessions are complete. They learn practical strategies and skills that they can continue to use on a day to day basis to support them to lean into life and love it!

What can your kinesiology sessions help with?
Kinesiology can help any aspect of your life – it is up to you to choose where you want to make a change. It can help enhance your performance, confidence, focus or the quality of the physical, mental, emotional or spiritual area of your life. It can help you release blocks, change limiting patterns or improve your ability to communicate.
It really does offer the ability to make the changes you need to transform your life.
What happens during a kinesiology session with Gay?
Each kinesiologist will work differently. Because I have extensive training in counselling and coaching I will always spend time in the beginning of a session determining what your current life experience is and what you are wanting to change. We will then together clarify what the issues could be and what needs to change.
Then we hand over to your body’s innate wisdom through kinesiology. I will check the integrity of specific muscles, this will then direct us to a process from my ‘kinesiology menu’ that is right for you. Sometimes that will involve lying down, fully clothed, for some gentle bodywork; other times it will involve meditations or visualisations. It can involve essential oils or vibrational essences.
You can sit back and relax however you are always in charge so, for example, if you prefer not to lie down or have a disability that might limit your movement or an allergy to essential oils there is always another option.
How will I feel after my session?
Most often my clients will exclaim about a lightness of being, more presence, less stress physically, a calmness or a quietening of the mind or a lessening or disappearance of the symptoms they arrived with.
Occasionally, especially if the issue was of a very traumatic nature, they may experience a healing crisis which can be similar to a homoeopathic aggravation. In these situations, I will generally recommend specific essences or essential oils to gently support the transformation. This will usually pass within 24 hours or so through dream activity or other natural processes.
What are vibrational essences and are they safe with other medication?
Vibrational essences were first developed by Dr Bach in the 30’s to help his clients with mental and emotional stress. Many people keep Bach’s Rescue Remedy handy at all times. They are gentle and supportive and safe for anyone to use and do not interfere with any medications. I often use them with my animals – in fact, the results I saw with them and my children as babies certainly contributed to my belief in their usefulness in my practice. And I love using them with kinesiology because we can just get past what the mind thinks the issue is and get straight to the core!
I am a trained Energy Medicine Practitioner with Pacific Essences but I also incorporate the use of Australian Bush Flower Essences, Alaskan Essences and Shell Essences in my practice.
How long will the effects of a session last?
That does depend on the nature of the issue. Often if the issue is an acute situation just one or two sessions will bring equilibrium back to the body. In other situations where there has been long-standing stress, it may take a few more sessions to get to the core. In that situation some clients choose to return initially more frequently to get a handle on their situation and practice the strategies I suggest – others prefer to work on their own so schedule visits 3 or 4 weeks apart.
Regardless, most clients find after the first session they are feeling substantially better in their day to day life. They then often want to deepen that experience and expand it to other areas of their life.
How often do I have to return?
Kinesiology is a client directed practice. Each session is complete in itself, once the presenting symptoms have shifted my clients generally know when they need a tune-up. Some choose to use it as a powerful tool in their personal or spiritual growth, others, with more high powered or stress-full lives will schedule monthly appointments as part of their self-care program. Still others will call me on an as-needed basis. It is a tool that you calibrate to suit you. That is one of the things I love about it!
What if I don’t know what I need?
Don’t worry! You sound like most of my clients on their first visit! I always recommend an hour and a half initially so we have time to get to know each other.
