Have you noticed that there are two types of people, those who love to schedule and plan
and those who struggle with it?
This often goes back to our neurological wiring and even to our usage and perception of time.
Many business advisors will tell you that if you don’t schedule and follow a plan nothing will work. I find it is far better to help my business clients find their own flow and way of working. Either way can work if used effectively. Either way can stop the growth of a business if used ineffectively!
Using this month’s concept of change I challenge you to look at a pattern of behaviour that is less effectual and see if you can shift…
For example if you love to schedule you might be also be very time and future orientated. You quite likely love planning and are very organised in the way you approach your business. You probably get to places early and can be quite stressed out by the less organised amongst us. Your challenge may well be too much planning and too much thinking. This can result in the old ‘paralysis by analysis’ or just behaviour that is driven by your schedule.
Your challenge? Practice being scheduled less, you can schedule in empty slots if you need to but just make space so you have time to go with the flow. And take a walk or do something unexpected in that time. By creating space you will free up any paralysis as you will be waking up your whole brain so your creative side and your planner can work together. Remember that it may well evoke some uncomfortable feelings in the beginning …. That is the change working.
On the other hand, if you don’t plan you are probably of more of a ‘go with the flow’ type of person. You may well be of a more creative bent and get bored and distracted easily. Things happen when they happen and you might even pride yourself on it. The challenge comes when you have a business and you haven’t done something that you needed to do. The business suffers and so will your pocket.
I won’t suggest you suddenly get out your excel sheet and start scheduling, but I will suggest you start creating a reminder system for yourself. Think through some of the things that have caused problems though not being done. Remind yourself to do them far enough in advance that they will get done on time. And then be accountable to yourself (or someone else) to do them.
This will again support whole brain activity so your creative side will have your organizer side on board to make things happen. This may feel uncomfortable in the beginning and you may well not want to do it but those uncomfortable feelings are the change taking place.
Whole brained entrepreneurs get more done with more fun. Doesn’t that sound like a plan?
