I was sad to see two of my faviourite brands of tuna were down towards the bottom of this list published by Greenpeace… I won’t be buying them anymore.
Looking after our earth is looking after ourselves – so forward this list on. To read more go to www.greenpeace.org.au/tuna
The hottest selling seafood item in Australia is canned tuna. As we devour our favourite fish, global tuna populations are in serious trouble.
Supermarkets play a key role in the overfishing crisis by selling us overfished tuna. Most tuna brands don’t even tell us which tuna is in the can.
Destructive fishing used for canned tuna also kills shark, turtles and juvenile tuna. Greenpeace’s Canned Tuna Guide identifies which supermarkets sell us overfished species and which tuna brands to avoid.
Check out the tuna can, before the checkout.
Brands are ranked below from 1 (most sustainable) to 10 (least sustainable).
1. Greenseas
2. Coles
3. Aldi
4. Woolworths
5. Safcol
6. Paramount
7. John West
8. Sole Mare
9. IGA, Franklins and SPAR
10. Sirena
Supermarkets need to stop selling tuna that’s destroying our oceans.
Overfished species such as Bigeye, Yellowfin or Albacore Tuna end up on Australian supermarket shelves. Skipjack tuna is the most sustainable tuna.
The most common tuna fishing method kills turtles, sharks and other marine life. Supermarkets must switch to sustainably caught Skipjack Tuna and avoid this scandalous death of marine life.
Ask supermarkets to stop selling overfished tuna. They should start with removing the worst brands from their shelves. www.greenpeace.org.au/tuna

We are in an age where there is no excuse for being unsustainable. We are bound by the need to be responsible for all walks of life and so we should. Humans have done enough damage.

It seems it is easy to forget that everything we do impacts on the bigger picture of the planet but taking responsibility for all we do is essential – and it seems hard for us humans. And taking responsibility for the little things leads to the bigger things. Thanks for commenting
